Corinth was a prosperous Roman colony in southern Greece, strategically located on the Isthmus between the Aegean and Adriatic seas. Paul wrote to its diverse, status-conscious church to stress that Christ crucified, though rejected by many, is God’s power and wisdom for those effectually called.
