Now there lived an old prophet in Bethel; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken to the king, them also they told to their father.

Bethel was a major worship center in Israel’s northern kingdom, where Jeroboam had established an illicit calf shrine; the old prophet lived there when the man of God arrived. Samaria, later the capital of the northern kingdom, is not named in this verse itself and should not be confused with Bethel.
