Mount Carmel, overlooking the Kishon Valley between Samaria and Jezreel, was the site of Elijah’s contest with Baal’s prophets and their subsequent defeat at the Kishon. From Carmel Elijah prayed for rain, while Ahab returned toward Jezreel, the royal center in Israel’s northern kingdom, after the drought-breaking sign appeared.
