At Horeb, where Elijah receives God’s commission, he is sent back through the region toward Damascus, capital of Syria, to anoint Hazael king. Jehu of Israel and Elisha from Abel-meholah near the Jordan are likewise appointed, while Beersheba marks Elijah’s earlier southern refuge.
