Damascus was the Syrian capital where Hazael was to be anointed king; Syria’s conflict with Israel made his rise an instrument of judgment. Beersheba and Mount Horeb mark Elijah’s flight to the southern wilderness and covenant mountain, while Abel-meholah was Elisha’s home east of the Jordan, from which he would succeed Elijah.
