Damascus was the capital of Aram (Syria), whose king Ben-hadad threatened Israel’s king Ahab; Syria denotes the Aramean kingdom centered there. Samaria, Ahab’s capital in the northern kingdom of Israel, was the city Ben-hadad intended to besiege, displaying his proud defiance of God’s people.
