The City of David was Jerusalem’s fortified core, where David established his royal residence and brought the ark; Solomon recalls God’s covenant faithfulness there. Egypt, Israel’s powerful southern neighbor, frames Solomon’s marriage alliance, while Gibeon, northwest of Jerusalem, housed the principal high place where Solomon worshiped.
