Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia were regions of Roman Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey. Though named in the letter’s opening rather than verse 8 itself, they identify scattered Christian readers whose faith in the unseen Christ produced love, belief, and joy amid exile and hardship.
