All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace-offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Ammon, east of the Jordan, had threatened Jabesh-gilead in Transjordan; Saul gathered Israel at Bezek and summoned them from Gibeah to defeat the Ammonites. At Gilgal, a historic covenant-renewal site near the Jordan, Israel publicly confirmed Saul’s kingship and rejoiced before the LORD.
