Jabesh-gilead, an Israelite town east of the Jordan, was threatened by the Ammonites from the east; its messengers brought the crisis to Saul’s home town of Gibeah. Saul then mustered Israel at Bezek and led the people to victory, later affirming his kingship at Gilgal.
