Gath was a major Philistine city on the coastal plain, home of Goliath; David’s presence there made him vulnerable as Israel’s celebrated warrior. The Valley of Elah, farther east in Judah, was where David had killed Goliath, the victory the Philistines of Gath recalled in this passage.
