Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron were major Philistine cities on the southern coastal plain of Canaan, while Ebenezer was the Israelite camp near the battle where the Philistines captured the ark. As the ark moved from Ebenezer through Philistine territory, the affliction at Ashdod showed the LORD’s sovereignty over Dagon and Israel’s enemies.
