Beth-shemesh was an Israelite town in Judah, where the Philistine-returned ark arrived; Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, Ekron, and Gaza were the five principal Philistine cities. Kiriath-jearim later received the ark after its brief stay at Beth-shemesh, highlighting God’s judgment on Philistia and Israel’s need to treat his holiness rightly.
