Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, Ekron, and Gaza were the five principal Philistine cities along Israel’s coastal plain; Beth-shemesh was an Israelite town west of Jerusalem, and Kiriath-jearim lay nearby in Judah. They trace the ark’s return from Philistine territory to Israel after God’s judgment humbled Philistia.
