These were Philistine cities on the southern coastal plain—Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, Gaza, and Ekron—where the ark had brought divine judgments after its capture. Beth-shemesh and Kiriath-jearim were Israelite towns in Judah’s hill country; the ark was returned first to Beth-shemesh, then sent to Kiriath-jearim for safekeeping.
