Behold; if it goes up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us."

Ashdod, Ashkelon, Ekron, Gath, and Gaza were the principal Philistine cities on Israel’s coastal plain; Beth-shemesh lay in Israelite territory to the east, and Kiriath-jearim later received the ark. The Philistines watched whether the ark would travel uphill toward Beth-shemesh, confirming that Israel’s God had sent their plague.
