Philippi was a Roman colony in Macedonia where Paul and Silas suffered persecution before arriving in Thessalonica (2:2). Judea, the southern Jewish homeland including Jerusalem, is later cited as the setting where churches likewise endured opposition, showing that suffering accompanied the gospel’s advance.
