Shechem, in the central hill country of Israel, was where Rehoboam went to be made king and where the northern tribes pressed their concerns; Jerusalem remained Judah’s royal center. Egypt, where Jeroboam had fled, and Shiloh, associated with the prophet Ahijah, frame the political and prophetic background to this counsel.
