Jerusalem, Judah’s capital, fell to Babylon/Chaldea in Mesopotamia after Egypt’s failed resistance to Babylonian power. The exile in Babylon fulfilled God’s judgment and allowed the land to observe its neglected Sabbaths until Persia conquered Babylon and permitted the Jews’ return.
