Jerusalem was Judah’s capital, where Jehoiakim ruled, while Egypt had previously imposed control over Judah. Babylon, the Mesopotamian empire also called Chaldea, defeated Jehoiakim and carried him toward exile; Persia later conquered Babylon and permitted Judah’s return.
