2 Corinthians 10:12

For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.

Corinth was a prominent Roman port city in Achaia, where Paul had founded the church he addresses. In this warning against self-commended teachers who measure themselves by one another, the Corinthian setting matters because the congregation faced competing claims to spiritual authority and status.
