Moab lay east of the Dead Sea, and Moabite raiders regularly crossed into Israel’s territory; their incursion provides the immediate setting for the burial interrupted in this verse. Samaria was the northern kingdom’s capital, while Syria (Aram), northeast of Israel, was the chief foreign oppressor in Elisha’s final days.
