Samaria was the capital of Israel’s northern kingdom, where King Jehoahaz was buried. Syria, centered northeast of Israel around Damascus, had repeatedly oppressed Israel during his reign; Moab, east of the Dead Sea, appears in the following episode as raiders entered Israel’s land.
