In Ahaz’s reign, Judah’s capital Jerusalem, including the City of David where kings were buried, came under pressure from Syria centered in Damascus and from Edom, which recovered Elath, Judah’s Red Sea port. Ahaz appealed to Assyria, whose intervention reshaped the region and exposed Judah’s dependence on imperial power.
