Babylon was the major city of a rising Mesopotamian empire east of Judah; Isaiah foretells that it would one day carry Hezekiah’s treasures and descendants into exile. Assyria, centered farther north in Mesopotamia, was the dominant threat in Hezekiah’s day, making Babylon’s later rise a striking warning of Judah’s future judgment.
