Edom lay south of the Dead Sea and had joined Israel and Judah against Moab; Samaria was Israel’s capital, from which King Joram came. Moab, east of the Dead Sea, retreated to its stronghold Kir-hareseth (likely modern Kerak) when its king saw the battle turning against him.
