Aram, or Syria, was the kingdom northeast of Israel, with Damascus as its capital and the Abana and Pharpar as local rivers. Naaman’s preference for these rivers highlights his resistance to Elisha’s command to wash in Israel’s Jordan, through which God chose to grant cleansing.
