Aram, or Syria, was the kingdom northeast of Israel, with Damascus as its capital; Naaman came from there to Samaria, Israel’s capital, seeking healing. The Jordan, and the Damascus rivers Abana and Pharpar, matter because Naaman later contrasts his homeland’s waters with the Jordan, where God commands his cleansing.
