The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

Ammon lay east of the Jordan, with its forces joined by Aramean allies from Rehob and Zobah near the Euphrates, Maacah, and Tob in Syria. In this battle scene, the Ammonites guarded their city while the hired Syrian contingents deployed separately in the open country.
