Ammon was the Transjordanian kingdom east of Israel, whose capital Rabbah (modern Amman, Jordan) was under Joab’s siege. Jerusalem was David’s capital, where the report was sent; Thebez was an Israelite town remembered for Abimelech’s death by a woman’s millstone, the precedent invoked to explain Uriah’s death near Rabbah.
