He brought forth the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and thus did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Ammon was the Transjordanian kingdom east of Israel, whose capital, Rabbah (near modern Amman, Jordan), David captured after the siege begun during the Bathsheba episode. Jerusalem, David’s capital in Judah, is where he brought the spoils and captives, marking Israel’s victory and the extension of his rule.
