When king David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the family of the house of Saul came out, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera. He came out, and cursed still as he came.

Jerusalem was David’s royal city, which he had fled during Absalom’s revolt; the Mount of Olives lay just east of it on his escape route. After crossing the Jordan eastward, David came to Bahurim, where Shimei publicly cursed him, exposing the humiliation of the displaced king.
