Gilead and Mahanaim lay east of the Jordan, where David had taken refuge during Absalom’s revolt; Shimei came from Gilead to meet him there. Gilgal, west of the Jordan near Jericho, marked David’s return crossing toward Jerusalem, his royal capital.
