Gilead, east of the Jordan, was Barzillai’s home region; Mahanaim there had served as David’s refuge during Absalom’s revolt. As David returns toward Jerusalem, he meets Barzillai at the Jordan near Gilgal, the crossing point where the king’s restoration is publicly advanced.
