Gilead, east of the Jordan, was Barzillai’s home region; Mahanaim there had served as David’s refuge during Absalom’s revolt. At the Jordan crossing near Gilgal, Israel’s leaders met David as he returned westward toward Jerusalem, the restored center of his kingship.
