Gilead, east of the Jordan, was Barzillai’s home region; Mahanaim, also east of the river, had served as David’s refuge during Absalom’s revolt. At the Jordan crossing near Gilgal, David returned westward toward Jerusalem, while Barzillai declined courtly honor and sent Chimham with him.
