But don't seek Bethel, Nor enter into Gilgal, And don't pass to Beersheba: For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, And Bethel shall come to nothing.

Bethel and Gilgal were major Israelite worship centers, while Beersheba lay in Judah’s south and had become a pilgrimage destination. Amos warns that seeking God through these compromised shrines cannot save Israel; Bethel will fall, Gilgal will go into exile, and Damascus represents the foreign captivity awaiting them.
