Zion and Samaria represent Judah and Israel, while Calneh, Hamath, and Gath were notable cities or kingdoms to the north and west; Lebo-hamath marks Hamath’s southern approach, and Karnaim lay in Transjordan. Amos invokes these comparably strong places to challenge Israel’s complacent confidence in its own security and status.
