Colossae was a small city in the Lycus Valley of Asia Minor, in present-day southwestern Turkey, where a Christian congregation faced teachings that could diminish Christ’s sufficiency. Paul’s description of Christ as the church’s head and “the beginning” affirms his supreme authority over that local body and all believers.
