But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Jerusalem was Judah’s covenant capital, from which Daniel had been taken after Babylon’s conquest. Babylon, in the land of Shinar (also called Chaldea) in southern Mesopotamia, was the imperial center where Daniel faced pressure to adopt royal pagan practices but resolved to remain faithful to God.
