Babylon, the imperial capital on the Euphrates in Mesopotamia, was the center of the Chaldean (Neo-Babylonian) kingdom, ruled here by Belshazzar. Jerusalem mattered because Babylon had taken its temple vessels after conquering Judah, setting the stage for Belshazzar’s sacrilegious feast.
