Egypt was the land from which Israel had been redeemed, while Mesopotamia was the broad region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Pethor, a town in Mesopotamia near the Euphrates, was Balaam’s home; Moab hired him from there to curse Israel, opposing God’s covenant people.
