Egypt was the land of Israel’s slavery, from which the Lord had recently delivered Moses and the Israelites. Midian, east or southeast of Canaan in the Arabian wilderness, was where Moses had lived with Jethro’s family and where Zipporah had stayed after Moses sent her back.
