It happened in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.

Egypt was the land where Moses had been raised in Pharaoh’s household, yet where his fellow Hebrews suffered oppression; there he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. The Nile, Egypt’s central river, frames Moses’ earlier rescue, while Midian was the region east of Egypt to which he later fled after this event.
