Egypt was the land where Israel was enslaved and where Moses had been raised in Pharaoh’s household; the Nile, Egypt’s central river, was associated with the earlier drowning of Hebrew infants. Midian, east or southeast of Egypt, becomes Moses’ refuge after he flees Pharaoh’s threatened judgment.
