Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

Egypt was the land where Moses had been raised in Pharaoh’s household, but he fled it after killing an Egyptian. The Nile, Egypt’s central river, frames the setting of his earlier identification with Israel, while Midian, east of Egypt across the Sinai region, became his refuge from Pharaoh’s threat.
