Egypt is the land where Israel was enslaved and where Pharaoh’s daughter found the infant Moses in the Nile, the river central to Egypt’s life and agriculture. Midian, east of Egypt across the Sinai region, becomes significant soon afterward as Moses flees there from Pharaoh.
