I will set your border from the Red Sea even to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River; for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you.

Egypt was Israel’s former land of bondage, while the Red Sea marked the southern boundary of the promised territory; the Great Sea is the Mediterranean, and the Euphrates lies far to the northeast in Mesopotamia. Together these landmarks describe the broad extent of land God promised to give Israel as he drove out its inhabitants.
