Egypt was the land where Israel was enslaved and where Moses was being sent to confront Pharaoh; the Nile was Egypt’s central river, soon to feature in God’s signs of judgment. Midian, east of Egypt across the Sinai region, was Moses’ place of exile and preparation before his return.
