Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him, "Please let me go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive." Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."

Midian was the region east or southeast of the Gulf of Aqaba where Moses had lived with Jethro’s family; from there he sought leave to return to Egypt. Egypt, centered on the Nile River, was the land where Israel was enslaved and where Moses was being sent to confront Pharaoh.
